A Russian agent from Chernivtsi was sentenced to life in prison for treason

The Chernivtsi Court of Appeals increased the sentence of a man who was found to be an agent of the Russian intelligence service and guilty of treason. Instead of 15 years in prison, the 41-year-old Chernivtsi resident was sentenced to life in prison.

According to the investigation, the man acted in the interests of the aggressor state for over ten years. Previously, the trial court had sentenced him to 15 years in prison; however, prosecutors filed an appeal and secured the most severe punishment provided for by law.

His 35-year-old accomplice was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the unlawful dissemination of information regarding the movement of weapons and the deployment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (Part 2 of Article 111, Part 3 of Article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

In court, prosecutors proved that the defendant began acting in the interests of the Russian Federation more than ten years ago. Acting on instructions from an individual located in the aggressor state, he conducted recruitment interviews with residents of Bukovina and enlisted them in pro-Russian activities.

After the full-scale invasion began, the man continued to collaborate with Russian intelligence services. He helped the enemy counter mobilization efforts and gathered intelligence on military logistics in the region.

In particular, the agent monitored the movement of train cars carrying weapons and ammunition through the Chernivtsi region and conducted reconnaissance of the local airport. He photographed the runway, administrative and warehouse buildings, the perimeter fence, and possible access routes to the facility.

The man transmitted the collected photos, videos, and text messages to his Russian handler via Telegram.

For one of the tasks, he enlisted the help of an acquaintance, who documented the movement of a military train, reported the number of containers, and sent a video recording.

The agent was detained in October 2024 in Chernivtsi after sending another report to an FSB representative.

In court, he did not admit guilt and denied collaborating with the Russian intelligence service. At the same time, evidence gathered during the investigation and presented by prosecutors confirmed his long-term activities on behalf of the aggressor state.
