Poland scrambles fighter jets following overnight Russian attacks on Ukraine
Western regions of Ukraine came under attack by Russian cruise missiles overnight. In response, military aviation operations were launched in Polish airspace, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces reported.
On the morning of December 6, Russian-launched cruise missiles targeted western Ukrainian regions, including Lviv, Ternopil, and Khmelnytskyi. The Ukrainian Air Force informed about the missiles heading toward these areas.
Due to the activity of long-range Russian aviation, Poland activated its military aviation operations in its airspace. Following standard procedures, the Operational Command deployed the necessary forces and assets at its disposal. Fighter jets were scrambled, and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems were put on high alert.
“These actions are preventive in nature and aimed at ensuring the security and protection of our airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to regions under threat,” the Operational Command stated.
During the combined attack, explosions were also heard in Kyiv. Local authorities reported air defense operations, and the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed Kinzhal and ballistic missiles flying toward the capital.
There were confirmed strikes in Fastiv, where railway infrastructure was damaged, forcing Ukrzaliznytsia to reroute passenger trains that would have passed through the city.
