Tens of thousands in Smolensk left without heat due to series of accidents

On the night of February 6, a major accident occurred on the main heating network in Smolensk, Russia.

The rupture was recorded at the intersection of Babushkina Street and 25 September Street, leading to a critical situation in the residential sector and social infrastructure.

According to official data, at least 40,000 residents were left without heating.

The regional governor, Vasyl Anokhin, reported that the shutdown affected 313 apartment buildings, as well as 10 kindergartens, seven medical facilities, and 14 educational institutions.

The regional Prosecutor’s Office, after starting an investigation, reported even more concerning numbers. According to their findings, due to the pipeline rupture, over 590 apartment buildings and social facilities in the Leninsky and Promyslovy districts were left without heat.

The mayor of Smolensk, Oleksandr Novikov, announced in the morning the cancellation of classes in five schools and nine kindergartens that fell within the “shutdown zone.”

To eliminate the consequences, around 100 energy workers and 15 units of special equipment have been deployed, but the situation remains tense.
