Components from the U.S. end up in Russian drones within a matter of months

Components from the U.S. that were manufactured just a few months ago are being found in Russian "Shahed"-type attack drones. The Ukrainian side claims that the route these parts took to Russia was too short and almost imperceptible.

This refers to microelectronics that quickly pass through shadow supply chains and end up in military systems. According to officials, this poses a serious challenge to global technology export controls. Vladislav Vlasyuk, the President’s Representative for Sanctions Policy, spoke about this during a visit to the U.S.

American components, manufactured just a few months before being used in combat systems, have been identified in Russian Shahed-type strike drones.  According to Vlasyuk, during talks in Washington, the Ukrainian side provided its partners with evidence that the supply chain for Western components to Russia and Iran has become extremely fast and difficult to control. In some cases, parts manufactured in late 2025 were already being used in drones that Russia used to attack Ukraine in late March 2026.

In effect, this means that the time between production and the appearance of components in military equipment has shrunk to just a few months. According to Ukrainian experts, some of these components are counterfeits, but a significant portion are genuine products from American, Japanese, Chinese, and German companies.

Vlasyuk noted that the U.S. government recognizes the seriousness of the problem and is prioritizing it, but has not yet been able to completely stop such shipments. “The U.S. government is prioritizing this issue, but the situation remains a serious challenge for the entire export control system,” he said.

He also emphasized that the supply of Western microelectronics to Russia and Iran directly impacts global security, as these components become part of strike systems.

In his statement, the official also mentioned the broader context of the use of cheap drones in modern conflicts. He cited the example of the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, where, according to him, Iranian drones costing about $30,000 were able to disrupt operations at a strategic energy facility in Qatar, which supplies a significant portion of the global liquefied natural gas market.

“This realization has finally become shared by us and our partners: components in the hands of terrorist regimes are weapons of mass economic destruction,” Vlasyuk emphasized. The Ukrainian side emphasizes that the main challenge now lies not only in the production of drones, but in controlling global technology chains that allow such systems to be rapidly assembled and deployed in warfare.
