Russian drones are deliberately targeting journalists

In Ukraine, journalists are advised not to display the word "PRESS" on their vehicles, as this could increase the risk of becoming a target for Russian attacks.

This was stated by Serhiy Tomilenko, head of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine.

According to him, in wartime, Russian drones are increasingly targeting journalists, so the “PRESS” marking no longer guarantees safety.

“International standards are about identification. The reality of war is about survival,” Tomilenko emphasized.

He noted that the NUJU is already supplying drone detectors to frontline Journalist Solidarity Centers, which allow for a timely response to threats.

The issue of journalists’ safety was discussed during a meeting in Vienna with Jan Brat, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. The detention of Ukrainian journalists in Russian captivity was also addressed separately.

The parties also discussed the role of frontline print media, which operate under shelling and provide people with information even in the absence of electricity and the internet.

In addition, Tomilenko held meetings with diplomats from the “OSCE Group of Friends of Journalist Safety” and representatives of the International Press Institute.

Journalist and director Kostyantyn Shtyfurak was killed in battle on the front lines while fighting for Ukraine. He was the commander of a drone unit on the front lines, with the call sign “Director.”

Former journalist for “Kyiv FM” radio and the publication “Our Kyiv,” soldier Oleksandr Golyachenko, was killed on the front lines.
