Two Kyiv CHP plants damaged: restoration timelines announced
In the night of 9 January, Russian forces launched a massive attack on Kyiv using rockets and drones.
According to Novyny.LIVE, citing sources within the Kyiv city authorities, the energy infrastructure and the city’s heating system were targeted. As a result, two major combined heat and power plants (CHPs), CHP-5 and CHP-6, were completely shut down.
Restoration timelines: CHP-5 is expected to be repaired in approximately two days. CHP-6 is planned to be restarted within one day.
Meanwhile, CHP-4 has already restored the circulation of the heating medium in the system.
Water supply facilities in the capital have also returned to operation, with specialists working to increase pressure in the networks.
City authorities have decided to drain water from the heating systems of buildings connected to the affected CHPs. Member of Parliament Oleksiy Kucherenko (Batkivshchyna) confirmed that municipal services received the relevant instructions.
Volunteer Maria Berlinska described the measure as a “necessary step” and urged people to act calmly and efficiently, warning that pipes could burst in freezing conditions if the water is not drained, potentially causing complete destruction of the heating system.
Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA) officials explained that draining water is a standard procedure during emergencies in cold weather when the circulation of the heating medium is stopped.
It is worth noting that the Cabinet of Ministers extended the operation of Ukraine’s thermal power plants and CHPs until the end of 2028 due to the war and risks to the energy system.
