Ignat discussed whether Ukraine would be able to shoot down ballistic missiles using SAMP/T systems
Yuriy Ignat, head of the Communications Directorate of the Ukrainian Air Force, stated that the version of the SAMP/T surface-to-air missile system currently in service in Ukraine has not yet been used to intercept ballistic targets.
This was reported by Radio NV.
According to him, the effective destruction of such missiles requires upgraded systems, the supply of which has already been officially agreed upon with international partners.
At the same time, the existing systems have demonstrated high effectiveness in other tasks, particularly in neutralizing Russian aircraft.
The military commander explained in detail the technical limitations and specifics of modern air defense systems.
He noted that intercepting ballistic missiles is an extremely complex technological process that requires ultra-powerful radars and high-precision guidance.
To date, the unique capabilities of missile defense have been demonstrated in practice by American Patriot systems, which successfully neutralize complex aerial targets.
“SAMP/T has been in Ukraine for a long time and has even shot down Russian aircraft. But we must hope for the version that can protect us from ballistic missiles today. Because, as we reported earlier, two systems are capable. Patriot has proven itself. The SAMP/T in the version we have has not yet been used against ballistic missiles,” Ignat stated on Radio NV.
The key factor in successfully intercepting high-speed missiles is the radar station’s ability to detect the threat and coordinate the interceptor.
At breakneck speeds, the system must ensure a precise mid-air collision between the two objects, a feat achievable by only a handful of global systems.
Ukraine expects to strengthen its defense capabilities thanks to new technological supplies from European allies.
“The radar must bring the interceptor and the ballistic missile together at a single point. This point is in the sky, and all of this happens at breakneck speeds. This is a technology that few manufacturers in the world have achieved, including the Patriot systems. We hope that French systems of this type will also enter service; the relevant documents have already been signed stating that France will supply them,” the Air Force spokesperson also said.
The prospects for expanding Ukraine’s air defense are linked to France’s decision to transfer the upgraded SAMP/T NG air defense system in 2026.
According to preliminary data from industry analysts, a total of eight modernized systems are planned for delivery, each of which will include six launchers.
The first such innovative system is expected to be delivered to the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the near future.
Patriot air defense systems can shoot down submunitions from the Russian “Oreshnik” missile, stated military expert Maksym Narozhny.
