"Kametstal" has completely halted operations following a Russian missile strike
The “Kametstal” steel mill in Kamyanske, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, completely halted production following a Russian ballistic missile strike on the night of September 5.
The attack damaged key production facilities, as well as the plant’s energy and transportation infrastructure. It is currently unknown when the plant will be able to resume operations.
According to the company, the Russian strike caused serious damage to Kametstal’s sintering and blast furnace operations, as well as its power and transportation infrastructure.
Due to the scale of the damage, the plant was forced to completely halt all production processes.
Urgent emergency repair work is currently underway at the plant. Once the rubble has been cleared, specialists will inspect the damaged areas, equipment, and infrastructure.
Based on the results of the inspection, the extent of the damage and the possibility of resuming production will be determined. No timeline has yet been announced for when the plant will resume operations.
Metinvest noted that only a few minutes passed between the announcement of the air raid alert and the missile strike.
As a result, not all of the plant’s employees were able to reach the shelters in time.
Five people were killed in the attack—four Kametstal employees and one employee of a contractor.
Four more plant employees sustained injuries of varying severity. They received medical care and were placed under medical supervision.
Metinvest’s Chief Operating Officer, Oleksandr Myronenko, emphasized that there were no military targets, military equipment, or military production facilities on the plant’s premises.
According to him, “Kametstal” operated exclusively to meet the needs of the civilian economy and produced cast iron and steel.
Thus, the Russian ballistic strike effectively halted operations at one of Ukraine’s major steel mills and resulted in the deaths of workers.
In response to the tragedy, September 5 was declared a Day of Mourning in Kamenskoye for those killed in the Russian attack.
National and corporate flags have been flown at half-mast at Metinvest Group facilities.
The company continues to assess the consequences of the strike and determine a further plan for the emergency restoration of Kametstal.
