Kellogg explained why Russia began attacking Ukraine during his visits
Previously, Ukrainians jokingly referred to the presence of U.S. President’s Special Representative Keith Kellogg as a kind of “air defense,” since during his previous visits, Russia had not launched large-scale attacks on Ukraine.
This time, however, the situation changed—Russian troops attacked Ukraine while Kellogg was there. The American explained why, in his opinion, Moscow might have decided to change its tactics.
During the conversation, a journalist reminded Kellogg that in Ukraine he had once been jokingly called “air defense,” since Russia had not launched any strikes while he was in a particular city. At the same time, the American’s latest visit unfolded according to a different scenario.
Kellogg suggested that one of the reasons might be his current status. After leaving his position in the U.S. government, he became a private citizen.
“I think Putin doesn’t like me, and I don’t like him either. And I think the fact that I’m now a private citizen—someone who doesn’t work for the government—probably plays a role in that as well,” Kellogg said.
At the same time, he believes that the Russian dictator may have been trying to send a certain message in this way. However, Kellogg is convinced that Moscow will not be able to achieve the desired result.
“He’s not winning; he’s losing. He’s trying to break the people’s will, but it won’t work,” the former U.S. special envoy stated.
Kellogg also noted that he isn’t particularly concerned about what Putin thinks of him. According to him, he values the opportunity to be in Ukraine and help the country whenever he has the chance.
At the same time, the American made it clear that his attitude toward the Russian dictator is negative.
"On a very personal and professional level, I don’t like him, and he doesn’t like me," Kellogg said.
