Kostenko called for shooting down “Shaheds” at the border so they do not reach cities
Roman Kostenko, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence, stated that Ukraine should organise countermeasures against Shahed-type kamikaze drones so that they are destroyed while still crossing the state border.
Kostenko said this on air at Radio NV.
According to the MP, enemy drones should not be allowed to reach Ukrainian cities.
“My point of view is that we should not allow Shaheds to be shot down over Kyiv, over Odesa, over Kherson, over other cities. They should all be shot down while crossing the Ukrainian border. One or two kilometres — fine, even ten. But they definitely should not reach or fly into Kyiv,” Kostenko emphasised.
He stressed that Shaheds are not some kind of unique weapon from the point of view of air defence.
“Shaheds are ordinary weapons that can be shot down by all air defence systems. The issue is simply that there are not enough of these air defence assets,” the parliamentarian noted.
Kostenko also highlighted the need to create cheap and effective means of destroying drones.
“This is simple economics that needs to be brought to the point where it is simply unprofitable for the Russians to launch these Shaheds,” he added.
