Latvia summoned a Russian representative following the attack on its consulate in Sloviansk
Latvia summoned the Russian chargé d'affaires and presented him with a note of protest following the Russian strike on Sloviansk, which destroyed the country's honorary consulate building.
Two employees of the diplomatic mission were injured in the attack. Latvia’s Honorary Consul in Sloviansk, Oleksandr Pavenko, was unharmed.
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it strongly condemns the Russian attack on the diplomatic mission.
“Today, Latvia summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of the Russian Federation and handed him a note of protest, in which it expressed its strongest condemnation of Russia’s brutal attack on the city of Slovianskand the destruction of the building of the Honorary Consulate of Latvia,” the statement reads.
Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže reported that partners in the EU, NATO, and international organizations have already been informed of the Russian attack.
“I confirm with outrage that the Latvian Honorary Consulate in Sloviansk was hit as a result of the Russian attack. I have informed EU and NATO ministers as well as international organizations. Russia may destroy buildings, but it cannot destroy Ukraine’s will or Latvia’s support,” she emphasized.
Earlier, the Ukrainian Red Cross office in Druzhkivka, Donetsk Oblast, was also damaged by Russian shelling. Windows were shattered, and doors and property were damaged, but staff and volunteers were unharmed.

As a reminder, on the morning of July 24, Russian troops carried out an airstrike on Sloviansk in the Donetsk region. Five people were killed in the attack, and nine others were wounded. Residential buildings, a business, and the premises of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Latvia were also damaged.
