Latvian volunteer Vitalijs Šampiņš killed on the Kharkiv front
Forty-three-year-old Latvian citizen and volunteer Vitalijs Šampiņš, known by the call sign “Vilks” (“Wolf”), was killed on the Kharkiv front. This was reported by LSM English, citing Latvian Television.
Embassy confirmation
Latvian Ambassador to Ukraine Andris Pildēgovičs confirmed the information about Šampiņš’s death in a conversation with Latvian Radio. According to him, the Latvian Embassy in Kyiv received a notification from Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense that Latvian citizen and Latvian volunteer Vitalijs Šampiņš was killed on August 18.

Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the deceased’s relatives, Pildēgovičs said.
Fifth volunteer killed
According to the ambassador, Šampiņš became the fifth volunteer from Latvia to be killed in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation, the aggressor state, in 2022.
