The occupiers have announced yet another plan to revive the Ilyich Steel Plant in Mariupol
The Russian occupation administration in the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol announced the start of the so-called “restoration” of the Ilyich Steel Plant.
The legitimate city council of the Ukrainian city called these actions yet another populist statement designed to cover up the large-scale looting of the industrial giant.
The so-called “deputy head” of the city’s occupation structure, Ignat Yaremchuk, reported that the Russians had allegedly secured funding to restart the plant. According to him, the process has already moved into the practical phase.
“The investor, selected by the federal government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, has begun the phased implementation of the project to revive the Ilyich Mariupol Metallurgical Plant,” the representative of the invaders stated.
Despite the high-profile announcements, representatives of the occupying authorities, as usual, did not provide any specific details, clear implementation deadlines, or the name of the mysterious “investor.”
At the same time, Yaremchuk added that the scope and focus of the plant’s operations would still be adjusted “depending on market conditions.” Such vague wording only confirms the fictitious nature of these intentions.
The legitimate Mariupol City Council emphasizes that the real goal of the Russian invaders’ actions is radically different from their public promises.
After the city’s capture in 2022, the Ilyich Steel Plant came under the de facto control of Chechen militants—the “Kadyrovites.”
All this time, the occupiers have been engaged exclusively in dismantling unique equipment into scrap metal for subsequent sale and their own enrichment.
Over the years of occupation, the invaders have regularly reported on the “restoration of industrial capacity” in the city they destroyed, yet none of the previous plans have been implemented.
The Ukrainian authorities in Mariupol are convinced that the enterprise is being used solely as a tool for propaganda and profit.
