UN urges Russia to halt attacks on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure
The United Nations has officially called on Russia to stop its attacks on Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure.
This was stated in a declaration by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk.
Türk emphasized that the destruction of civilian infrastructure is unacceptable, as such actions create a humanitarian catastrophe for millions of civilians. He stressed that the ongoing shelling by Russia violates international humanitarian law.
“Attacks on civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international humanitarian law. I urge the Russian Federation to immediately cease these attacks,” the UN human rights chief said.
The latest large-scale strike was carried out on the night of February 12. Energy facilities in various regions of Ukraine came under attack. In Kyiv, damage to key elements of critical infrastructure was recorded, leaving thousands of homes without centralized heating.
Kyiv’s mayor confirmed serious problems with heat supply on both banks of the capital. The international community continues to call on Russia to immediately stop terrorizing the civilian population.
As of 10 a.m. following the overnight massive attack on February 12, energy workers had restored electricity to 25,000 households in Kyiv. However, more than 100,000 consumers remained without power, and efforts to eliminate the consequences of the strikes were ongoing.
Earlier reports indicated that thousands of buildings in Kyiv were left without heat and electricity, with several districts affected.
