Police have identified seven militants involved in the torture of a female volunteer in Donbas

Law enforcement officials have already identified seven members of the illegal armed group “Bezler” who are suspected of torturing a Ukrainian volunteer. The woman, who had been assisting the military and evacuating civilians from the combat zone, was abducted by militants from the Luhansk region and illegally held for more than three months in occupied Horlivka.

Investigators from the Main Investigative Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine, in collaboration with operatives from the Criminal Investigation Department, have identified three members of the illegal armed group controlled by Igor Bezler who were involved in war crimes against the civilian volunteer. Among the suspects are two Ukrainian citizens and one citizen of the Russian Federation.

Investigators established the direct involvement of the three suspects in the torture. They subjected the woman to physical and psychological violence, inflicted numerous injuries and mutilations on her, and committed sexual violence. The abuse was intended not only to extract information but also to punish the volunteer for assisting Ukrainian military personnel and evacuating civilians.

After the torture, the victim was not released. She continued to be held without any legal grounds in the premises of the seized Horlivka prosecutor’s office. In total, the woman spent more than three months in captivity—until September 2014.

Thus, National Police investigators have already identified seven members of two illegal armed groups involved in the prolonged unlawful detention, torture, and sexual violence against the victim in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. Three members of the “Bezler” illegal armed group have been notified of the charges against them.
