A captured occupier recounted nine days without food or water at his posts

Russian prisoner of war Ilya Shangareyev spoke about the conditions of service in the Russian military and the heavy losses suffered by the occupiers.

According to him, during assaults, the Russians were guided remotely along routes by drones, where they saw the bodies of dead and wounded Russian soldiers.

Shangareyev claims that he and another soldier went nine days without food or water. As a result, they became so weak that they could barely walk. After that, a drone once again guided them across a field and through a forest strip, and later, the commander remotely directed the soldiers to the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ positions, where they were taken prisoner.

According to the prisoner, he joined the Russian army due to pressure from law enforcement officials and financial difficulties. Initially, Shangareyev was allegedly threatened with criminal prosecution. After signing a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense, he was sent to the 428th Motorized Rifle Regiment, where he underwent training for about a month.

He also said that soldiers who tried to escape from the unit were found and returned. Afterward, they might be thrown into a pit and beaten. Shangareyev himself described the command’s attitude toward Russian soldiers as treating them like “cannon fodder.”

Shangareyev was taken prisoner in April 2026 near Yalta in the Donetsk region. He is currently in Ukraine as a prisoner of war.
