Russia shifts blame for Chernobyl, hiding its own attack

Russian propaganda is spreading fake claims about Ukraine allegedly preparing provocations at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (ChNPP). At the same time, Russia cynically ignores the fact that it itself struck the sarcophagus over Reactor 4. The Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) states that the purpose of these narratives is to remove Russia’s responsibility for the nuclear safety threat.

The CCD notes that Russian propaganda deliberately distorts the words of the ChNPP leadership. For example, as “evidence” of fabricated provocations, they use a statement by ChNPP Director General Serhiy Tarakanov about the vulnerability of the sarcophagus in the event of a new strike. “Russian propaganda deliberately misrepresents these words, presenting warnings about risks as ‘preparation for provocation,’” the CCD emphasized.

At the same time, Russian sources completely ignore a key fact: on February 14 this year, the sarcophagus over Reactor 4 was damaged by a Russian drone strike. According to the CCD, it is precisely the chaotic Russian attacks that create real threats to nuclear safety, not only for Ukraine but for the entire region.

According to the Center, these information campaigns have a clear goal. Russia seeks to create an “informational alibi,” discredit Ukraine internationally, and shift responsibility for its own actions. A few days ago, ChNPP Director General Serhiy Tarakanov openly stated that the new safe confinement might not withstand another strike. “If a Russian missile hits the sarcophagus or even nearby, the protective structure could collapse,” he said.

Tarakanov also reported that after the February 14 attack, the sarcophagus lost some of its key functions. According to him, restoring the protective structure could take three to four years.

The CCD emphasizes that Russia’s attempts to blame Ukraine for imaginary provocations are a typical tactic of information warfare. Meanwhile, the real threat to the Chernobyl NPP arises from the actions of Russian forces, who repeatedly put nuclear infrastructure at risk.
