Russia used 40 "Lancet" drones in a demonstration attack on Kyiv

On March 16, 2026, Russian occupiers launched 40 “Lancet” drones toward the Ukrainian capital in an attempt to create a propaganda effect for the Russian domestic audience. 

Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov, an advisor to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense, reported on Telegram that the operation was intended to display the wreckage of these drones in Kyiv, despite their unsuitability for long-range strikes. To achieve this goal, the enemy modified the drones by removing their warheads and installing additional batteries, which allowed them to cover a distance atypical for this type of weaponry.

Ukraine’s air defense forces effectively engaged the targets, and only a few units managed to reach the city without causing any damage to infrastructure. The minister’s advisor emphasized that the use of expensive frontline drones for such a “show” is a strategic mistake by Russia, as these resources could have been used on the front lines. Instead, Ukrainian specialists were able to thoroughly examine the updated electronics of the downed drones and refine tactics for countering small aerial objects.

While Russia wastes scarce weaponry on media stunts, Ukrainian military officials stress that such actions only confirm the Russian command’s poor effectiveness in planning operations. The debris that fell near Independence Square was the only result of the enemy’s costly operation. Ukraine continues to strengthen its air defenses, using the experience gained from every repelled attack to improve the effectiveness of mobile fire groups and electronic warfare systems.

As a reminder, during the morning attack on March 16, one of the Russian drones managed to reach the very heart of the capital and crashed on Independence Square.

On the night of March 16, Russian occupiers carried out a massive air attack on the Kyiv region, deploying over 30 drones of various types. 

Russian troops attacked a residential area in Zaporizhzhia: there is damage and people have been injured.
