Russia sentenced a captured Aidar fighter to 22 years in prison

The Southern District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don sentenced Ukrainian prisoner of war Vladimir Makarenko, a fighter with the “Aidar” battalion, to 22 years in prison, accusing him of allegedly planning a terrorist attack and the seizure of a pretrial detention center.

According to the occupiers, Makarenko, along with two other defendants, allegedly planned to seize and set fire to Pretrial Detention Center No. 5 in Rostov-on-Don, after which they would demand an end to the war, the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war, and the transfer of the occupied territories to Ukraine.

According to the court’s fabricated verdict, the Ukrainian prisoner of war must serve the first six years of his sentence in prison and the remainder in a maximum-security penal colony.

The defense attorney for one of the other defendants cast doubt on the investigation’s version of events, pointing out contradictions in the case file. In particular, the attorney claims that his client was transferred to another detention facility even before the alleged crime was planned, and that one of the prosecution’s key witnesses was a cellmate who testified under a pseudonym.

Volodymyr Makarenko had previously been sentenced by a Russian court to 18 years in prison in the case against Ukrainian prisoners of war from the “Aidar” battalion.

As a reminder, the well-known anarchist artist David Chichkan was killed on the front lines.

Journalist and soldier Oleksandr Golyachenko also died in the war.
