Russia is recruiting foreigners on a massive scale to fight in the war against Ukraine through Western platforms
Russian recruiters are actively using Meta, Google, and other Western digital platforms to find and recruit foreigners to fight in the war against Ukraine.
According to a study by Code for Africa, an African network of digital investigators, as reported by Politico, the Russian recruitment system focuses primarily on young men from poor countries in Africa and Asia. Researchers identified at least 89 websites, seven accounts on Facebook and other social media platforms, as well as 39 accounts and channels on messaging apps.
These ads purport to offer civilian jobs: construction, security, assistance with obtaining visas, or even participation in auditions for film roles. Other ads make no secret of the fact that they are offering military service: they publish AI-generated images of dark-skinned men in Russian military uniforms and promise generous payments—up to $15,000 for signing a contract and $3,000 per month.
Although tech companies, including Meta and Google, have already blocked hundreds of advertising campaigns and recruiters’ websites, Russia continues to create new accounts constantly. This threat requires special attention and coordinated efforts by the international community to cut off the Kremlin’s avenues for recruiting foreigners to fight in the war.
