Russia may continue sabotage against infrastructure in the Baltic Sea — intelligence
Finnish military intelligence stated that Russia will likely continue attempting to damage underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
The assessment by the Finnish military was reported by Yle.
This concerns facilities on which communications, energy, and the operation of critically important services in the region depend.
In Helsinki, they emphasize that such actions could create a chain-reaction effect, even if they do not formally appear as an open attack.
In the review published on Thursday, the intelligence assessed that Russia’s potential to influence the situation in the Baltic remains significant.
Specifically, Moscow could use ships operating in the region for broader pressure or covert operations.
This tool allows action “on the edge” — increasing tension and testing the reactions of states without direct military confrontation.
The Finnish side essentially warns that maritime infrastructure is becoming a vulnerable front, where a single successful operation could trigger repercussions across several countries.
At the same time, intelligence does not predict a direct military threat to Finland this year. The reason is that Russia’s main forces are concentrated on the war against Ukraine, which limits the possibilities for large-scale actions in the northern direction.
However, the report emphasizes that if the development and restoration of Russian armed forces continue, Russia’s ability to wage war toward Finland could increase significantly.
Helsinki makes it clear that the current “window” of relative safety is not a guarantee for the future — and requires systematic preparation and enhanced monitoring in the Baltic Sea.
