Russia does not have reliable protection for its submarines against underwater attacks
The Russian military lacks effective means to protect its submarines from attacks from underwater, said Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy.
According to him, the Russians are trying to strengthen their ships’ defenses using various structures, including so-called “mangals,” which are designed to shield the upper parts of ships from drone strikes. At the same time, such solutions are not particularly effective against underwater attacks due to the specific way shock waves propagate in water.
“The upper deck is sometimes protected by so-called ‘mangals.’ This … may make sense when it comes to attacks by loitering munitions or small drones,” the spokesperson noted.
According to him, it is impossible to deploy such protective systems below the waterline, as this significantly affects seaworthiness. Furthermore, even an explosion in the water at a certain distance has a significant impact due to the specific way shock waves propagate in an aquatic environment.
“Underwater explosions have slightly different physics than air explosions because water does not expand; therefore, in this sense, it makes no difference. Of course, there is no protection whatsoever,” he added.
Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, made these remarks during a television broadcast, according to aUkrinform correspondent.
Lavrov stated that Russia has no intention of stopping the war.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that an important moment in the war is now unfolding for Ukraine. According to him, Russia no longer has the upper hand on the battlefield, and the main tool remaining to Vladimir Putin is ballistic weapons.
