Russia has released an AI-generated fake story claiming that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were routed near Lyman
Russian propaganda has spread yet another fake story about the alleged “crushing” of Ukrainian units in the Lyman sector, created using artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. Experts quickly debunked the video, confirming that it was entirely fabricated.
Russian media outlets launched a new disinformation campaign claiming the “complete rout” of territorial defense units in the Lyman sector. In the video, which was actively shared online, a man in military uniform is presented as a supposed servicemember of the 120th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade. In the video, he describes a “catastrophic situation” on the front lines and claims that the command has allegedly abandoned its positions. However, an investigation by the Center for Countering Disinformation revealed that this material is entirely fabricated.
Experts determined that the face in the video was altered using deepfake technology, and the voice was generated by artificial intelligence and does not belong to a real person. The original source of the disinformation was a newly created account that had previously spread other false claims about the alleged “collapse” of Ukrainian units. “The goal of such systematic information operations is to demoralize Ukrainian society and undermine trust in the command of the Defense Forces,” the Center for Countering Disinformation notes.
According to experts, Russian propaganda systematically uses such disinformation campaigns in an attempt to create the illusion of failures on the front lines and sow panic among the population. However, all such reports are verified and regularly debunked by official agencies and information security experts.
