Russians Again Failed to Break Through Defenses in Sumy Oblast – ISW
On July 19 and 20, Russian troops launched limited offensive attempts in the north of Sumy Oblast but were unsuccessful. The occupiers continue to try to create so-called buffer zones in border areas.
As analysts explain, Russia is not giving up on its attempts to create defensible buffer zones in the Sumy region along the international border.
“On July 19 and 20, Russian troops carried out limited offensive operations in the north of the Sumy region but did not advance,” the report states.
Geolocated footage published on July 18 confirms Russian strikes on Ukrainian positions in the Sumy region southeast of Oleksandriya, as well as along the international border west of Kucherov in the Kursk region.
It is worth noting that both settlements are located northwest of the city of Sumy.
This indicates that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding their positions in this area, contrary to Russia’s claims.
A source reporting on the activities of the Russian “North” military group stated on July 20 that Russian troops are attempting to consolidate their positions in the eastern part of Taratutino (southeast of the city of Sumy—ed.). It is highly likely that the invaders have penetrated the eastern part of Taratutino.
It is also noted that units of the 1st Motorized Rifle Battalion of the 2nd Motorized Rifle Regiment of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS RF) are operating near Maryino (east of the city of Sumy—ed.).
This is the first time the ISW has documented reports of units from the 2nd Motorized Rifle Regiment (Russian Aerospace Forces) participating in combat operations.
