SBU releases fragments of “Oreshnik” missile after strike on Lviv region

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has published photos of fragments of the Russian ballistic missile “Oreshnik”, which the occupiers used to strike Lviv region on the night of 8–9 January 2026.

Law enforcement officials have identified the site where the fragments fell and preliminarily confirmed that the recovered components belong to the Oreshnik missile system.

Among the items found were the stabilisation and guidance unit, parts of the propulsion system, fragments of the orientation mechanism, and the nozzle from the deployment block platform.

The SBU noted that all fragments are considered evidence and are being prepared for detailed examination. The use of this missile against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure is being investigated as a war crime by Russia.

According to the security service, the strike on targets near the border with the European Union was aimed at destroying critical infrastructure in the region under rapidly deteriorating weather conditions.

Investigations are ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the attack, as well as the individuals involved in organising and carrying out this crime.

Despite the missile’s power, the strike in Lviv region only penetrated two concrete slabs and destroyed a collection of Vladimir Lenin’s works.

Ukraine is initiating an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in connection with Russia’s ballistic missile strike on Lviv region.

European politicians and officials reacted strongly to Russia’s mass attack on Ukraine on the night of 9 January. Several countries condemned the strikes as war crimes by Russia and called for increased pressure on the Kremlin. The incident involved the possible use of a medium-range ballistic missile, “Oreshnik”.
