Ukraine convenes an urgent UN Security Council meeting over the “Oreshnik” strike on Lviv region

Ukraine is initiating an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council in connection with Russia’s ballistic missile attack using an “Oreshnik” missile on Lviv region. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed that the world must give a clear response to yet another act of terror by the Russian Federation.

This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha.

According to Sybiha, the use of ballistic missiles against civilian regions is a gross violation of international law. Ukraine has already begun the procedure to convene the UN Security Council in order to hold Russia accountable for the escalation.

“Russia used an ‘Oreshnik’ ballistic missile against Lviv region. We are convening a meeting of the UN Security Council and a meeting of the Ukraine–NATO Council. This terror cannot remain unpunished,” the minister said.

During the night, Lviv and Kyiv came under attack. Earlier this week, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih were subjected to massive shelling. Sybiha emphasised that Russia has definitively chosen the path of brutality instead of diplomacy, ignoring all peace initiatives.

At the same time, the Kremlin officially confirmed the launch of a ballistic missile at Lviv. Russian propaganda is attempting to justify yet another terrorist act with a fake claim about an alleged “attack on the residence” of Vladimir Putin. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine criticised this position, calling on partners to respond to real crimes rather than to fabricated pretexts created by the aggressor.

The head of the MFA called on the international community to take concrete steps:

  • Strengthening air defence — providing additional systems to intercept ballistic targets.
  • New sanctions — imposing strict restrictions on the Russian military-industrial complex.
  • Diplomatic isolation — public condemnation of the use of experimental weapons against the civilian population.

Let us recall that the Russian Federation officially acknowledged the launch of a ballistic missile at Lviv on the night of 9 January. Russian officials referred to fake information about an alleged “attack on the residence” of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, attempting in this way to justify yet another terrorist attack against Ukraine.
