SBU strikes Russian frigate Admiral Essen in the port of Novorossiysk
During an attack on the port in Novorossiysk on the night of March 2, the Security Service of Ukraine, together with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, struck the Russian frigate Admiral Essen, which is a carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles.
This was reported by media sources within the Security Service of Ukraine.
According to them, the strike hit the ship’s central superstructure. As a result of the attack, a fire broke out on the deck and lasted for about 18 hours.
Sources noted that during the strike, grenade launchers used to deploy thermal decoys and radio signal scatterers exploded.
In addition, the TK-25 electronic warfare system, which is used to detect radar emissions and create interference, was damaged.
Radars for target illumination ZR-90 Orekh radar, which are part of the ship’s air-defense missile guidance system, were also hit. According to preliminary data, the main surveillance radar Fregat-M2M radar, which provides long-range detection of air and surface targets, was likely damaged as well.
The Security Service of Ukraine noted that during the operation it managed to break through the multi-layered air defense system around Novorossiysk Bay and the port.
As a result of the attack, the ship sustained critical damage that significantly limits its combat capabilities. According to the sources, the frigate Admiral Essen is currently unable to use Kalibr cruise missiles to strike Ukrainian territory.
It was previously reported that powerful explosions occurred at the Belbek Air Base.
Drones also attacked the Ilsky Oil Refinery and Sevastopol.
