Satellite Images Show How Russia Is Protecting Its Kalibr Launchers in Novorossiysk
The British Ministry of Defense has released satellite images of the Russian Federation’s naval base in Novorossiysk, which show new methods of protecting Project 636 submarines.Three “Varshavyanka”-class submarines—carriers of “Kalibr” cruise missiles.
The photos show that all three submarines are in a semi-submerged position—only the conning tower remains above the water.
Two of them are additionally covered by metal protective structures, known as “mangals,” which the Russian military uses to protect equipment from drone attacks.
Analysts note that the combination of a semi-submerged position and such structures should reduce the risk of the submarines being struck by maritime and aerial drones. At the same time, one of the submarines was without additional protection, which may indicate preparations to set sail or the aftermath of a previous attack. There is no official confirmation of the latter possibility.
