Kremlin promises not to change position on War in Ukraine following killing of Iran’s leader
The Kremlin stated that the U.S. and Israeli attack, which resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has not affected Moscow’s approach to negotiations regarding its armed aggression against Ukraine.
According to the Russian BBC service, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Russia remains open to political-diplomatic settlement efforts to safeguard its own interests. He made this statement during a briefing with journalists, referencing points repeatedly expressed by the Kremlin.
Although Iran is a key military partner of Russia, official Moscow is attempting to show the consistency of its course regarding Ukraine, even amid the elimination of senior Iranian officials. Peskov noted that Russia continues to formally value U.S. mediation efforts in the negotiation process. At the same time, he added that Russian leadership relies primarily on itself regarding security issues and strategic objectives.
These comments came amid a large-scale military operation in the Middle East, which has heightened global tensions and could potentially affect logistics for Russia’s weapons supplies. Nevertheless, Russian officials insist that their methods and objectives in the war against Ukraine remain unchanged. The international community continues to monitor how events in Iran may affect the intensity of fighting and further support for Russian forces with Iranian technologies.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the trilateral negotiations between Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia, scheduled for early March, remain on track.
For reference, former U.S. President Donald Trump instructed his team to expedite the peace talks.
Zelensky also confirmed ongoing negotiations involving Umerov with U.S. representatives in Geneva.
