In Kryvyi Rih, rescuers brought miners to the surface from two mines after Russian shelling

Mine rescue teams brought workers from two mines in Kryvyi Rih to the surface after they were trapped underground due to power outages caused by Russian shelling of the city.

This was reported by the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES) on Telegram.

On 22 January, as a result of a drone attack, one of the mines was left without power: miners were trapped at the -1,135 m, -865 m and -475 m levels. Rescuers decided to evacuate people on foot through vertical and inclined shafts. Accompanied by specialists from the State Militarised Mine Rescue Service of the SES, the workers covered almost 7 km of underground passages. The operation lasted six hours.

After midnight, a power outage occurred at another mine, where 92 miners were underground. There, rescuers used a lifting method based on the counterweight principle of the mine cage; the operation lasted four hours.

The SES noted the coordinated work of the mine rescue teams and the use of well-practised rescue procedures, which made it possible to avoid injuries and ensure the safe ascent of workers to the surface.

Throughout 22 January, Kryvyi Rih was subjected to a continuous combined attack with missiles and drones, which lasted more than 10 hours and became the longest such attack on the city since the start of the full-scale war.
