Peru has stated that Russia has recruited nearly 500 of its citizens to fight in the war against Ukraine
On August 10, Peru’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported for the first time that there were fatalities among the nearly 500 Peruvian citizens whom Russia had recruited to fight in the war against Ukraine. The Peruvian Foreign Ministry stated that its citizens had taken part in combat operations on the side of Russian forces.
Last Sunday, August 9, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that among the recruited citizens there were those who had been killed, those missing in action, and even those taken prisoner.
“It has been officially reported that 459 Peruvians enlisted in the army, 11 were killed, 114 are missing, and 3 were taken prisoner by the Ukrainian army,” the statement reads.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also clarified that a total of 31 Peruvian citizens were evacuated from Russia. Of these, 28 have returned to their homeland, while three remain in Europe “of their own free will.”
In addition, the statement urged Peruvians not to fall for “false job offers, as they may end up in the grip of criminal human trafficking networks.” The ministry emphasized that to perform military service in any other country, they must obtain permission from the Peruvian government.
Furthermore, the Foreign Ministry urged citizens to report recruiters to the prosecutor’s office and the national police.
EFE also reports that last Tuesday, relatives of Peruvians recruited by Russia held a demonstration in front of the Russian Embassy in Lima. They demanded the return of their relatives, especially those who were wounded, and called for information about their whereabouts.
As a reminder, on Friday, August 7, a humanitarian warehouse belonging to the World Health Organization was destroyed in Dnipro as a result of an attack. There were no people on the premises at the time of the strike, and no casualties were reported.
Over the past 24 hours, the occupiers lost 1,130 soldiers and more than 400 pieces of military equipment.
In the Kherson region, one person was killed and two were wounded as a result of Russian shelling.
