In Russia, demand for horses has surged due to the fuel crisis

Amid the fuel crisis in Russia, rural residents are increasingly buying horses instead of cars to travel off-road and run their farms.

According to Russian media reports, demand for workhorses has increased severalfold in recent weeks. Whereas an animal might previously have had to wait two or three months for a buyer, farms are now selling or reserving seven to eight horses every month. They are used for trips to the forest, haymaking, and everyday farm work.

The cost of a workhorse ranges from 100,000 to 200,000 rubles, depending on age and breed. Despite the maintenance costs, for some residents of rural Russia, this has proven to be cheaper than operating a UAZ or “Niva” vehicle.

Meanwhile, the fuel crisis in Russia is worsening: gasoline is running out at gas stations, and lines are growing longer.

Russia has allowed the use of lower-quality gasoline due to the fuel crisis.
