Russia unveils Mi‑34M1 light helicopter with new VK‑650V engine

At the NAIS‑2026 airshow, the Russian aviation holding “Russian Helicopters” showcased a new version of its light multi-purpose helicopter, the Mi‑34M1.

The main feature of the updated model is the VK‑650V engine, which Russia describes as the first fully domestically produced powerplant for aircraft weighing up to four tonnes.

The helicopter is being marketed as a modern, Russian-made light aircraft capable of performing a wide range of tasks — from training and aerobatics to patrol and civil operations.

Industry representatives stated that the development focused on ease of handling, fuel efficiency, and the ability to operate in various climatic conditions.

Flight tests of the new helicopter began in December 2025. During trials, the stability, control systems, and manoeuvrability of the aircraft were evaluated.

Following successful tests, the model was presented to the public as a demonstration of Russia’s “technological independence” in aviation.

For context, Russia is increasing arms supplies to Africa, while China is supplying equipment to Russia for the production of “Oreshnik” hypersonic missiles.
