The Navy explained why it is more difficult to shoot down enemy drones over the sea

Russian forces are actively using the maritime route to launch drone attacks on Ukraine, as intercepting them over water is more difficult than over land. This was stated by Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, during a televised marathon.

According to him, kamikaze drones most often enter Ukrainian territory from the sea. The enemy chooses this route for a reason, as the operations of mobile fire groups at sea are significantly hampered by weather conditions and the unique characteristics of the maritime environment.

Pletenchuk noted that unlike on land, where a network of mobile fire groups can be deployed, such capabilities are limited at sea. Additional factors include rough seas and other natural conditions that complicate the work of air defense forces.

According to the spokesperson, Russian troops exploit these conditions when launching waves of drones from the temporarily occupied Crimea and Russian territory, particularly to strike Ukraine’s port infrastructure.

At the same time, he noted that the night of June 8 was less intense compared to some previous attacks, although the consequences of the enemy strikes could not be avoided.

On the night of June 5, Russian troops carried out another massive attack on the Odesa region using Shahed-type strike drones. Residential, logistical, and civilian infrastructure facilities were targeted.

Ukraine’s air defense forces shot down 249 of the 272 drones that Russian troops had launched into the country’s territory since the evening of June 5.
