Construction of underground shelters in crowded areas has begun in Zaporizhzhia

Construction has begun in Zaporizhzhia on new underground shelters in city parks and other high-traffic areas. The project aims to create protected spaces designed to enhance residents’ safety during air raid alerts. Regina Kharchenko, secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, announced this on Telegram

“Construction of new underground shelters has begun in various parts of the city! One of the first locations is already being prepared in Trudova Slava Park. In total, we plan to build up to ten such facilities in different parts of the city,” Kharchenko wrote.

They will be located in areas with high foot traffic and as close as possible to residential areas so that residents can quickly reach a safe place during an air raid alert.

“This is a new type of protective structure for Zaporizhzhia. After the first shelters are built, we will analyze their performance, refine our approach, and gradually expand the network of such shelters across the city,” Kharchenko wrote. According to her, the first underground shelters are expected to be completed within the next few months.
