Ukraine is preparing for a new wave of jet drones

Ukraine is preparing for a new wave of jet drones

Russia has begun deploying large numbers of faster, next-generation jet drones in an attempt to evade Ukrainian interceptors. Ukraine, for its part, is preparing for a new phase of aerial combat by strengthening its interception systems and developing cheaper counter-missiles, according to Business Insider.

Ukraine is preparing for a new phase of the war in the skies, where Russian jet drones move faster than previous models and are forcing a complete overhaul of the defense system, while Kyiv is already working on new interception capabilities to maintain its air superiority. This marks another round in the technological standoff, where every new development immediately triggers a response from the other side of the front lines.

According to Business Insider, Russia has begun using new jet-powered strike drones, which are an evolution of the Iranian “Shaheds” and have undergone a series of modifications under the names “Geran-3,” “Geran-4,” and “Geran-5,” with the latest variants already capable of flying significantly faster and at higher altitudes than previous models. According to Ukrainian intelligence, the “Geran-4” is equipped with a turbojet engine and can reach speeds of approximately 500 km/h, which makes it significantly more difficult to intercept using conventional means.

Ukrainian interceptor drones, which have already proven effective against slower targets, essentially function as “flying defenders” that destroy enemy drones in the air through direct collision or a nearby explosion; however, their capabilities are limited against faster jet-powered targets. That is precisely why Ukraine is simultaneously developing new, faster interceptor models and cheaper missiles to keep pace with the escalation.

The Main Intelligence Directorate describes the new Russian drones as more complex designs with reinforced airframes and more powerful engines, allowing them to maneuver and cover long distances of up to 450 kilometers; they are launched from long rails and quickly reach cruising speed. At the same time, Ukrainian military officials emphasize that even these advanced systems are not “invulnerable,” as every new technology immediately faces a response in the form of countermeasures.

As noted in the article, the war increasingly resembles a technological race, where one side launches a new development, and the other quickly adapts and creates a countermeasure, forming a constant cycle of updates and countermeasures in the skies over Ukraine. That is precisely why Ukraine is already building up its stockpile of interceptors and preparing for the fall and winter, when attacks traditionally intensify.

Experts emphasize that the key trend of this war is the constant acceleration of technical solutions, and jet drones are yet another step in this competition, which has no quick end but is constantly changing the rules of aerial combat.

In recent days, Russian occupation forces have advanced in several areas of the Donetsk region, particularly near Pokrovsk, Rodynske, Kostyantynivka, as well as near the villages of Illinivka and Pleshchiivka

Ukrainian defense forces stated that the village of Zapsillia in Sumy Oblast remains under their control, despite Russian reports of an alleged “capture.” The military called these statements yet another information attack and a fake that has nothing to do with reality
