Ukraine is ignoring its allies' calls to stop striking Russia's oil and gas sector

Ukraine is ignoring its allies' calls to stop striking Russia's oil and gas sector

Ukraine continues to strike at Russian energy infrastructure, despite warnings from Western partners regarding the stability of global fuel prices.

This was reported by The Telegraph in an article dated April 5, 2026. Specifically, last night, the Primorsk oil terminal near St. Petersburg and the Lukoil-Nizhegorodnaftorgsintez refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Russia came under attack, resulting in damage to the facilities.

According to the publication, Western officials, particularly from the U.S., had previously expressed concern over such actions by Kyiv due to the global energy crisis caused by the war in the Middle East and Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Head of the President’s Office Kirill Budanov confirmed that there is pressure from allies demanding a halt to attacks on Russia’s energy sector while the conflict in the Persian Gulf continues. However, the Ukrainian side continues to implement its own strategy of “kinetic sanctions,” using domestically produced weapons to weaken the aggressor’s economic potential.

These activities come amid successes by Ukrainian border guards, who destroyed $28 million worth of Russian equipment overnight, and the development of new domestically produced Inguar-4 armored vehicles. While Donald Trump issues ultimatums to Tehran and Hungary deploys its army to guard gas pipelines, Ukraine demonstrates its readiness to act independently on matters of national security. Currently, official Kyiv is not commenting on allegations that it is ignoring its partners’ requests, focusing instead on destroying Russian logistics and resources.

Some international partners have appealed to Ukraine to cease attacks on Russian oil refineries due to the risk of exacerbating the global energy crisis. Kirill Budanov reported this in an interview with Bloomberg.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that if Russia ceases its strikes on energy infrastructure, Ukraine will respond in kind. At the same time, he expressed doubt regarding the possibility of Russia announcing a general mobilization in the near future, noting that he does not have complete information on this matter.
