Ukraine has called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in response to Russia's attacks on ships in the Black Sea
The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday, July 27, in response to Russian attacks on civilian vessels and Ukrainian infrastructure in the Black Sea. Ukraine initiated the meeting, which will begin at 5:00 p.m. Kyiv time.
According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga, Kyiv expects UN Security Council members to provide a “clear and principled response” to Russia’s latest attacks against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure and commercial shipping.
“Russia continues to strike peaceful Ukrainian cities and threatens freedom of navigation and global food security with its attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea,” Sibiga said.
The foreign minister emphasized that a strong signal from the UN Security Council is necessary to increase pressure on Russia and ensure accountability for its actions.
“Ukraine remains committed to the UN Charter and international law and continues to work toward a comprehensive and lasting peace. Russia must stop its attacks and end the war,” the minister added.
Earlier reports indicated that Russia had attacked civilian vessels in the Black Sea near Ukrainian ports. The Ukrainian side asserts that such strikes pose a threat not only to Ukraine but also to international shipping and the supply of food to global markets.
This was announced by Andriy Sibiga, head of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As a reminder, Ukraine’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Andriy Sibiga stated that Russian attacks on civilian vessels in the Black Sea could trigger a sharp rise in global food prices and hit the poorest countries hardest.
In the Black Sea, Russia attacked a foreign merchant ship flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda. One person was killed, and three others were injured.
