Ukrainian lawmakers call on Canada to fund transformers — CBC World
A Ukrainian parliamentary delegation in Ottawa, Canada, called on the federal government and provinces to contribute to financing electrical transformers for Ukraine ahead of winter. CBC News reports.
Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze, chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Ukraine’s Integration into the EU, said Ukraine is preparing for a potentially extremely harsh winter. According to her, Russia, an aggressor state, is intensifying attacks on energy infrastructure, water supply and sewage systems, using the cold as an instrument of war. The lawmaker warned of the risk of humanitarian disasters.
Equipment financing
Klympush-Tsintsadze said Ukrainian representatives are asking the Canadian government and provinces to join financing packages managed by the EU Energy Community. She noted that transformers manufactured in North America are incompatible with European ones, so Canada could contribute to the production of the necessary equipment ahead of winter.

According to the lawmaker, one of the Canadian provinces has already supported this initiative, though she did not disclose its name. The issue was also to be raised at a meeting with the Ontario government.
Attacks and support from partners
CBC News reports that throughout the summer, Russia significantly intensified air attacks on Ukrainian cities, using massive waves of jet-powered drones, ballistic missiles and guided aerial bombs. According to data cited by the outlet, referring to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, more than 800 civilians were killed in July and August.
Another member of the delegation, Oleksandr Merezhko, said Ukraine is confronting not only Russia but also states that, in his words, supply it with drones, ammunition and manpower. Klympush-Tsintsadze also said Ukrainians are tired of the war and expressed the view that countries farther from Ukraine have a lesser understanding of the threat posed by Russia.
