The pace of the Russian military's offensive has changed dramatically — ISW
Ukrainian defenders are launching successful counterattacks, making gains in the Donetsk region and near Huliaipole in the Zaporizhzhia region.
According to a report by analysts at the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), intense fighting continues along the entire front line, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces are managing to seize the initiative in certain areas.
The highest concentration of enemy forces is currently observed in the Donetsk region, where Russian troops are attempting to launch attacks in the areas of Sloviansk, Kostiantynivka, and Pokrovsk.
Despite pressure from the occupiers, Ukrainian forces have managed to advance near Kostiantynivka and Novopavlivka, improving their tactical positions.
In the Pokrovsk area, the enemy has changed tactics, primarily using infantry assaults without deploying heavy armored vehicles.
The occupiers are attempting to move artillery units closer to the front line, but the Defense Forces are effectively countering these efforts.
Military leadership is paying particular attention to the Zaporizhzhia sector, which the aggressor now considers a priority.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasized that the intensity of the enemy’s offensive operations in the Huliaipole area is currently significantly higher than in other sectors of the front.
According to Dmytro Filatov, commander of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment named after Dmytro Kotsyubailo, the occupiers are attempting to advance toward Orikhiv.
This city is considered the last major “Ukrainian stronghold” in the Zaporizhzhia region, which the enemy seeks to capture in order to launch a further offensive on the regional capital.
The Ukrainian command responded to the threat in a timely manner, regrouping troops and deploying additional reserves to this sector as early as late January.
The main goal of these actions is to prevent the enemy from taking advantageous positions and to halt its advance toward the strategically important city of Zaporizhzhia.
ISW analysts note a significant slowdown in the pace of the Russian offensive compared to the start of the year. While the enemy captured approximately 319 square kilometers in January, this figure dropped to 23 square kilometers in March, the lowest level since September 2023.
