Video: The SBU Foiled an Assassination Attempt on the Head of a Defense Company in the Kyiv Region
The SBU and the National Police foiled a terrorist attack by Russian intelligence services targeting the head of a defense industry company in the Kyiv region. Law enforcement officers discovered and defused explosives that were intended to be used to kill the official, and the suspect was detained in Poland while attempting to travel to Russia.
According to available information, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) organized the assassination attempt. The enemy intended to kill the official using explosives attached under the driver’s seat of his car.
The Security Service’s counterintelligence unit and the National Police detected, seized, and defused the bomb in advance; it contained 1 kg of hexogen, equivalent to 2 kg of TNT.
It was established that the terrorist attack was being planned by a 63-year-old retiree who had moved to the Kyiv region from Luhansk Oblast. In February of this year, the FSB recruited him through his son, who had left the temporarily occupied territory and is residing in Russia.
After receiving instructions from his Russian handlers, the suspect purchased two cell phones and a power bank at a local store. A month before committing the crime, he retrieved the remaining components for the homemade bomb from a hiding place he had set up in advance. A few days later, the suspect assembled all the components and attached the finished improvised explosive device to the car.
He also placed a camouflaged phone with a connected power bank across from the vehicle, which provided his handlers in Russia with a live video feed to trigger the explosion.
Immediately after planting the explosive device, the perpetrator took a bus to Poland, intending to flee to Russia from there.
According to the SBU, the perpetrator was detained in the Republic of Poland while attempting to transit through Belarus on his way to Russia.
Currently, as part of the pre-trial investigation, SBU investigators and prosecutors have submitted a request to the law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Poland for the detainee’s extradition to Ukraine. He has been notified in absentia of his status as a suspect under Part 2 of Article 15 and Part 1 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (completed attempt to commit a terrorist act).
Comprehensive operations were conducted by operatives and investigators from the SBU Main Directorate in Kyiv and the Kyiv Region, in conjunction with the SBU Counterintelligence Department and officers from the National Police Main Directorate in the Kyiv Region, under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
