Zelenskyy showed the aftermath of the strike on the Syzran Oil Refinery

Ukraine struck the Russian Syzran oil refinery, located more than 800 kilometers from the border. The Syzran refinery came under attack on the night of May 20–21. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called such attacks “long-range sanctions” against the Russian oil refining industry.

This was reported with reference to a statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a post by the Special Operations Forces, and a publication by the Unmanned Systems Forces.

The Special Operations Forces reported that Deep-strike units struck the Syzran oil refinery in the Samara region, which belongs to Rosneft.

The Special Operations Forces stated that the strike on the Russian plant was carried out by operators from the 1st Separate Center and the 413th “Raid” Regiment.

"A massive fire has been reported at the facility, which has a capacity of up to 9 million tons of oil per year and is located more than 800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border," the Special Operations Forces statement said.

What is known about the Syzran Refinery

The Syzran Oil Refinery is part of Rosneft’s Samara oil refining complex and produces gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, as well as other petroleum products. The plant’s annual processing capacity ranges from 7 to 8.9 million tons of crude oil.

In addition to civilian needs, this refinery supplies fuel to the Russian military aviation and military units in central and southern Russia. Petroleum products are also exported from there via the Volga River and the Caspian Sea.

"Unmanned aerial systems are consistently reducing the enemy’s ability to supply Russian troops with fuel and lubricants and to sustain its aggressive war against Ukraine," the Security Service of Ukraine emphasized.
