Zelenskyy spoke about "Russia's tactics" in the energy market and possible attempts to circumvent sanctions

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that Russia is using complex mechanisms in the global energy market to mitigate the pressure of sanctions and protect its assets from bankruptcy.

He made this statement during a closed-door meeting with journalists.

According to the president, international partners have repeatedly asked Ukraine to scale back strikes on Russian oil infrastructure due to the risk of rising global energy prices.

At the same time, Zelenskyy considers this logic flawed and suggests that it may be part of Moscow’s strategy.

The president emphasized that the full reinstatement of sanctions against Russian oil is a key factor in putting pressure on the Russian economy.

“I am waiting for sanctions on Russian oil to be fully reinstated… Otherwise, every day will only reinforce my conviction that this was a ploy by Russia,” he noted.

Zelenskyy also stated that one possible motive for easing sanctions could have been an attempt by Russia to preserve or sell its oil companies’ foreign assets.

This refers, in particular, to the assets of Russian energy companies in European Union countries, including enterprises that, due to sanctions, are either not operating or are restricted in their financial transactions.

The president emphasized that oil remains the main source of funding for Russia’s war, so sanctions pressure in this sector must remain as strict as possible.

Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree enacting the NSDC’s decision to impose sanctions against five Russian cultural figures.

As a reminder, Zelenskyyhas imposed sanctions against entities supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex.
