The Ukrainian Armed Forces are using anti-aircraft guns manufactured after World War II
Despite the front lines being actively reinforced with modern Western weaponry, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to make effective use of the KS-19 100-mm anti-aircraft guns.
This is reported by analysts at Defence Express.
Developed in the late 1940s to combat high-altitude aircraft, these systems have now found a “second life” as ground-based artillery, according to Defence Express analysts.
In the context of modern warfare, the KS-19 has effectively lost its primary significance as an air defense weapon due to the emergence of high-speed missiles and aircraft.
However, the 100-mm caliber and significant firing range allow them to be used to engage enemy positions, fortifications, and personnel at long distances.
In practice, these artillery systems perform the functions of conventional guns integrated into a comprehensive system for engaging ground targets.
The high muzzle velocity of the projectile, which was originally designed to reach high altitudes, now ensures a flat trajectory and accuracy when firing at ground targets.
The main drawback of the system remains its significant weight and size, which makes the KS-19 quite cumbersome compared to mobile self-propelled artillery.
The heavy weight requires a large crew and specialized towing equipment, which significantly limits the units’ maneuverability in dynamic combat conditions.
Experts note that the use of such “prehistoric” weaponry is a necessary but rational step to preserve the service life of modern howitzers.
In conditions of high-intensity combat, every available barrel capable of firing shells at the enemy becomes a valuable asset on the battlefield.
As a reminder, the situation on the front lines for the Ukrainian Defense Forces is the best it has been since June of last year.
Russia has changed its drone attack tactics; ISW warns of a new threat.
Russian drone attacks are a response to our proposal for an Easter truce — Zelenskyy.
As a reminder, the Russians attacked the Kyiv region with drones: there is damage.
Russia also attacked Ukraine with 164 drones; air defense forces destroyed 150 UAVs.
