Family lawyer says new investigation into singer Mohbad’s death launched — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria, Olatunji Disu, the lawyer for the family of singer Ilerioluwa “Mohbad” Aloba, said that Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu had authorized a new investigation into the circumstances of his death. As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the family submitted the relevant petition on April 14, and police headquarters in Abuja received it on May 7.
The petition is being handled by a special unit
According to Ogungbe, the family requested an independent and thorough reinvestigation, including a comprehensive forensic analysis of the circumstances of the death. The lawyer claims that the police chief approved the request and instructed Lagos State Police to take immediate action.
Ogungbe said the family was informed that the petition had been transferred to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau (SEB) for further investigation. A family representative has already been invited and met with the new team of investigators. The family is also in contact with the investigators and is ready to provide documents, witnesses and other materials.
Premium Times Nigeria journalists were unable to obtain confirmation of this information from the police: spokespersons for the Nigeria Police and Lagos Police did not respond to calls or text messages.

The NGO’s lawsuit is unrelated to the petition
Ogungbe stressed that the reinvestigation does not depend on the decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which on September 25, 2026, dismissed a lawsuit seeking the resumption of the investigation into Mohbad’s death. The lawsuit was filed by the non-governmental organization Break the Silence Foundation, and the court ruled that it lacked the legal standing to make such a request.
The lawyer clarified that the Aloba family did not file this lawsuit and that it was filed without its knowledge or consent. According to him, the family seeks a transparent investigation and does not want to predetermine its outcome.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27 and was buried the following day. Nine days later, his remains were exhumed for an autopsy, which was intended to help establish the cause of death. The singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, said he would not agree to his son’s final burial until the cause of death is established.
