Bangladesh: Rahman invited as BIMSTEC chair, not prime minister

Bangladesh stated that the country will not be officially represented at the BRICS summit. Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir announced this in Dhaka on September 10.

Invitation for the BIMSTEC chair

According to Kabir, India invited Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to the summit not in his capacity as head of government, but as chair of BIMSTEC. BIMSTEC is the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.

Earlier invitation

As The Hindu International reports, Kabir's explanation came amid speculation over whether Bangladesh would send a representative to the BRICS summit. The outlet notes that India sent Rahman an early invitation in August 2026.
