Belgium adopts a new artificial intelligence development strategy
Belgium has adopted a new national strategy for the development of artificial intelligence. It is intended to strengthen the country’s capabilities, professional skills and public policy tools, as well as ensure greater control over the development and use of AI.
Control over AI
Minister of Digitalisation Vanessa Matz stated that the strategy is designed to ensure that artificial intelligence creates value for Belgium while preserving the country’s control over the development and application of the technology. Anadolu Agency reports on the adoption of the strategy.
According to Matz, 42% of Belgium’s residents already use generative AI, while 34.5% of Belgian companies have introduced artificial intelligence technologies. This places the country among European states where such technologies are spreading rapidly.

Strategy implementation
The new strategy updates the first National Convergence Plan, adopted in 2022, taking into account changes in the technological and geopolitical environment. It provides for the use of existing investments in research and innovation, public services, infrastructure and access to European opportunities.
The document also provides for concentrating resources on priority areas and accelerating the transition from AI experiments to its implementation. The strategy will be discussed with Belgium’s federal entities to determine an implementation mechanism. Planned measures include reforming the Strategic Committee on Artificial Intelligence, supporting sectors in which Belgium has particular advantages, expanding access to data for priority projects and introducing a “sovereignty grid” for public procurement of cloud and AI technologies.
