Berlin has criticized the participation of AfD lawmakers in the St. Petersburg forum

The German government has stated that the participation of representatives from the far-right party "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum runs counter to the country's national interests.

This was announced by Steffen Meyer, deputy spokesperson for the federal government.

According to him, the German Foreign Ministry strongly advised AfD representatives against traveling to Russia and warned that the government would not support such contacts.

Berlin emphasized that participation in Russian state propaganda events creates a false impression of normalized relations with the aggressor country and contradicts Germany’s foreign policy course.

The AfD delegation at the forum included Bundestag members Markus Frommayer and Steffen Kottre.

German authorities also recalled Russia’s crimes against the civilian population of Ukraine and emphasized that Germany, together with the European Union, adheres to a policy of minimizing contacts with representatives of the Russian government.
