Bulgaria has stated that it will not block the new package of EU sanctions against Russia
Bulgaria will not block the European Union’s 21st sanctions package against Russia and Belarus, although it continues to object to certain provisions. This was stated by the country’s Defense Minister, Dimitar Stoyanov.
According to him, the government has already approved an official position stating that Sofia will not exercise its veto but will continue to voice its reservations.
In particular, Bulgaria opposes the inclusion of Patriarch Kirill on the sanctions list, believing that this will not have a significant impact on Russia. Sofia also objects to sanctions against Lukoil shareholder Vagit Alekperov, fearing negative consequences for the company’s operations in the country.
Separately, the Bulgarian side expressed concern about potential problems with the maintenance of the Sofia metro due to restrictions on companies linked to Russia.
Despite these reservations, the government confirmed that it would not stand in the way of the adoption of the new sanctions package.
