The UK has announced new sanctions against Russia and signed a nuclear agreement with Ukraine
During the G7 summit, the United Kingdom announced a new package of sanctions against Russia and signed an important agreement with Ukraine in the field of nuclear energy. London’s new measures are aimed at increasing pressure on the Kremlin and strengthening Ukraine’s energy security.
The new package of British restrictions is primarily aimed at Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, which is used to circumvent international sanctions and export energy resources.
Financial institutions and networks that help Russia circumvent restrictions and ensure the supply of resources to the Russian military-industrial complex and the Russian Armed Forces have also been sanctioned.
In addition, the UK has imposed an embargo on a number of vessels transporting Russian liquefied natural gas, which is intended to further limit the Kremlin’s revenue from energy exports.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have reached an agreement on the supply of enriched uranium to NAEK Energoatom over the next two years.
The British company Urenco will implement the project, and financial support will be provided by the UK Export Finance agency. £210 million has been allocated for these purposes.
“Russia’s aggression threatens not only Ukraine but also the security of all of Europe. That is why Britain is stepping up the pressure—cutting off the revenues that fuel Putin’s war and providing Ukraine with energy for the winters ahead,” Starmer said.
One of the central themes of the G7 summit was the security of Ukraine and Europe. During the first session, the leaders of the G7 countries discussed further steps to support Kyiv and achieve a just peace.
According to sources, Keir Starmer called on G7 partners to intensify joint efforts to ensure Ukraine’s long-term security and stability on the European continent.
New sanctions and the nuclear deal demonstrate the UK’s intention to remain one of Ukraine’s key allies in countering Russian aggression.
